After the United States shot down a rumored Chinese spy balloon this year, President Joe Biden of the United States stated on Sunday that relations between Beijing and Washington should thaw "very shortly."

Biden claimed that after his talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping at the G20 summit in November on the Indonesian island of Bali, relations had deteriorated.

Washington's choice in February to destroy a supposed Chinese covert operative inflatable that overflew the US started a political disagreement between the world's two biggest economies.

A visit to Beijing by Secretary of State Antony Blinken that had been charged as an opportunity to further develop relations was dropped over the episode.

Biden was questioned on Sunday at a press conference that followed the G7 summit in Hiroshima, Japan, regarding the absence of a planned hotline between the United States and China.

You are correct; we ought to maintain an open hotline. That's what President Xi and I agreed to do and discuss at the Bali conference,” he stated.

Biden continued, "And then, this silly balloon was flying over the United States of America carrying two freight cars worth of spy equipment."

When it was shot down, everyone's communication style changed. That should begin to thaw very quickly, I believe.

China has also been enraged by the Biden administration's targeting of advanced microchip trade, citing the dangers of military use.

On Sunday, the president defended those actions, a day after the leading economies of the Group of Seven issued a warning about China's "militarization activities" in the region.

He stated, "It is building its military, and that is why I am not prepared to trade certain items with China."

"We've currently got a responsibility from our partners that they're all not going to do that either, give that sort of material.

"However, that is not a hostile act; rather, it is an act that demonstrates that we are going to do everything in our power to preserve the status quo."
