A new Versace collection titled "La Vacanza," or "the holiday," was co-designed by three-time Grammy winner Dua Lipa.
Cannes honorary pathway looks 2023: Lipa and Donatella Versace, the label's creative director since 1997, began working together in 2018 following the pop star's daring leotard and denim jacket ensemble for her first Brit Award performance. During a press conference on Tuesday ahead of the show, the couple stated that the rest was history.
Intimate and timed to coincide with the world's most extravagant film festival, the collection debuted poolside at a topiary-filled villa in Cannes on Tuesday evening. Troye Sivan, Rina Sawayama, and Peggy Gou were among the musicians who were invited, and they were mostly influencers and Gen Z-friendly musicians. However, F1 racer and fashion icon Lewis Hamilton did make an appearance. The only person to attend Cannes as a guest was British model Rosie Huntington-Whitely.
The Italian design house has long perceived that style is about something other than garments. The priority for the late founder Gianni Versace and his sister Donatella has always been creating memorable moments that transcend the industry and become part of pop culture. Who can forget the bizarre jungle dress in emerald green that Jennifer Lopez wore to the Grammy Awards in the 2000s, which inspired tech engineers to create Google Image Search?
The resort collection, which is an industry term for clothes produced outside of the traditional Spring-Summer, Fall-Winter seasons, began in October with Lipa sending Donatella sketches of her vision. It was inspired by Versace's storied archives from the 1990s. I truly can't draw by any means," the vocalist said at the question and answer session in Cannes. " It was sufficient! Donatella chimed in, bringing Lipa's involvement in the entire creative process (“from A to Z”) to the forefront.
Versace is not the only brand harnessing the power of well-known co-designers, particularly musicians. Earlier this month, Blackpink's Jennie Kim and Erykah Badu unveiled capsule collections with Calvin Klein and the Italian fashion house Marni. Beyonce and Balmain's Olivier Rousteing collaborated in March to create 16 couture looks based on her critically acclaimed 2022 album "Renaissance."
The last Versace show was in the Hollywood Hills two days before the Oscars, and Lady Gaga wore a hot-off-the-runway black gown with a low-slung waist and mesh bodice on the red carpet. Versace is working hard to establish itself as the designer of choice.
Rather than depending on customary big name dressing open doors, Versace's strategy of holding decisively planned design shows around occasions, for example, the Oscars or Cannes exploits the current display (and media consideration) and utilizations it for their potential benefit.
As the assortment was quickly accessible on the web, it won't take long to check whether the technique works for customers as well.
