» » » » » Back In The Spotlight, Fan Bingbing Celebrates Asian Designers At Cannes

Since a tax controversy threatened to derail her career, actor Fan Bingbing has rarely been seen outside of China. This month, she continued her recent return to the spotlight with a series of high-profile appearances at the Cannes Film Festival.

The "X-Men" actor was seen at a number of galas and red-carpet events during the 12-day festival, which ends on Saturday. And keeping in mind that Fan has long addressed significant Western names like Louis Vuitton, she rather utilized the spotlight to feature less popular — and as a rule, Asian — planners, wearing outfits by South Korean, Filipino and Vietnamese brands, among others.

Fan made her first appearance at Cannes in 2018, and she wore a Christopher Bu creation to the opening event on Tuesday, which was the premiere of Johnny Depp's new film "Jeanne du Barry." Tigers and a bamboo forest were printed on the classy sleeveless ballgown (top picture) in a style reminiscent of traditional Chinese paintings.

She completed her look with an ornate updo hairstyle that might look at home in a Chinese period drama with a hefty train following her down the Palais des Festivals red carpet.

Fan's Cannes outfits seem to have been generally welcomed on Chinese virtual entertainment. Her appearance on the celebration's premiere night momentarily moved on the Twitter-like stage Weibo, where the hashtag #FanBingbingCannes has now been seen more than 6 million times since last Tuesday.

Her Cannes looks were not just created by Asian designers. Last week, she wore a figure-embracing outfit by Mikael D, the name established by Canadian-Lebanese creator Mikael Derderian, and a strapless dark dress bearing enormous yellow blossoms from Russian brand Yanina Couture. The following day, on Tuesday, she showed up to the premiere of Wes Anderson's "Asteroid City" in a dress made of feathers by Tamara Ralph, co-founder of Ralph & Russo.
